A virtual drive, accessible in Windows Explorer, running inside physical memory would provide quite a noticeable performance boost. Windows can be configured to use the disk for temporary files, so the system and most applications will use the fast in-memory disk for temporary data, potentially providing dramatic improvements in speed.
While this might take a lot of stress away from your hard disk drive and potentially prolong its life, don't forget that extra stress will also be put on your RAM.
Still, a RAM Disk can really provide a great performance boost for applications that use it. This tool is free for personal use.
